In the first part of Oral Hygiene Basics, we focused on how to choose a suitable toothbrush and toothpaste, as well as correct brushing techniques to ensure effective cleaning. This time, we focus on interdental cleaning and introduce additional tools such as mouthwash and tongue brushes. We also cover how to prevent gum disease and maintain oral health.

Interdental cleaning: Should you choose dental floss or an interdental cleaner?

Unfortunately, brushing your teeth alone is not enough. Nearly 40–45% of food debris and plaque accumulates between the teeth. That is why it is important to use dental floss or an interdental cleaner. It is especially important to do this in the evening before brushing, so that the toothpaste can also reach the spaces between the teeth.

When using dental floss, correct technique is essential. The floss must move in contact with the side of the tooth while moving it back and forth two or three times. This way, the interdental spaces are cleared of both larger food particles and plaque.

Apteq Prof and Easy Dental Flosses

The Philips Power Flosser oral irrigator is a convenient alternative to dental floss, offering:

  • Effective cleaning — the targeted water jet removes food debris and bacteria from between the teeth and under the gumline, which is particularly necessary for those wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances.
  • Gentleness on gums — the irrigator provides a gentle clean that does not irritate the gums as can happen when using dental floss.
  • Ease of use — the Power Flosser is a convenient alternative to traditional dental floss and is well-suited for those who dislike or have difficulty using floss.

The consequence of not cleaning between the teeth is the accumulation of plaque, which leads to bad breath and tartar, causing the gums to bleed. Untreated gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, which in the worst cases can lead to tooth loss.

Tongue cleaning brush

Plaque accumulating on the tongue can cause bad breath. A tongue brush or scraper is suitable for cleaning the tongue. It should be gently pulled from the back of the tongue to the front, removing bacteria and food debris. Cleaning the tongue is not mandatory.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash is not necessary on a daily basis, but an antibacterial mouthwash can help reduce the number of bacteria and support gum health. If you wish to use mouthwash daily, it is recommended to use an alcohol-free version to avoid dry mouth, which can cause bad breath. An ideal solution is Apteq mild-flavored mouthwash containing natural oils.

The sugar clock and its importance

To maintain dental health, you should follow the sugar clock, which means leaving at least 3–4 hour breaks between meals, during which thirst is quenched with water. Excessive sugar promotes bacterial growth and an acidic environment, which damages the teeth.

Dentists recommend:

  • Leave 3–4 hour breaks between meals.
  • Prefer sugar substitutes or natural sweeteners.
  • Brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water after consuming sugary products.

How to prevent gum disease?

Gum diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are common problems. Proper oral care is essential to keep gums healthy and prevent more serious issues.

In addition to the home remedies mentioned above, it is important to regularly visit a dentist and hygienist, who remove tartar, identify early signs of gum disease, and provide recommendations for further care.

In summary – good oral hygiene helps prevent gum disease and supports overall health. Effective care begins with choosing the right tools and brushing technique. While interdental spaces require daily cleaning with floss or an irrigator, the use of mouthwash and tongue cleaning is not mandatory.

It is important to:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for at least 2 minutes.
  • Clean between your teeth before the evening brushing.
  • Avoid consuming sugary and acidic products between meals.
  • Prefer chewing gum with xylitol and toothpastes containing fluoride and xylitol.
  • Visit the dentist at least once a year.

By combining regular brushing, the right toothpaste, and thorough interdental cleaning with monitoring the sugar clock, you can significantly reduce the risk of gum disease and enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile!
