What is Xylitol?

Xylitol is a natural sweetener, and its regular use is an evidence-based method for preventing dental caries. The cavity-preventing effect of xylitol is primarily linked to its impact on the caries-causing bacterium Streptococcus mutans.

Fruits and plants naturally contain xylitol, and it is primarily synthesized from corn for use as a sweetener. It is utilized in both the food and cosmetics industries, and xylitol is particularly common in all types of oral hygiene products.

The Effect of Xylitol on Oral Microbes

It is scientifically proven that xylitol inhibits the metabolism of SM bacteria, slows the growth of all caries-causing SM strains, and reduces their levels in the oral microflora(1,2).

Using Xylitol with Food

Consuming xylitol during and after meals keeps oral bacteria active but leaves them “starving,” as they are unable to digest it. Xylitol also increases amino acid levels in plaque and saliva, neutralizing the acid produced by bacteria(3).
Furthermore, xylitol participates in the natural remineralization process of tooth enamel during meals by forming complexes with calcium ions(4).

Xylitol’s Contribution to Oral Hygiene

Removing plaque from teeth is an essential part of oral hygiene. By lowering bacterial levels, xylitol also reduces plaque and thus supports overall oral hygiene(4).

Xylitol is not a substitute for oral hygiene.
